I have dual bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Child Development from California State University. I am a few classes shy of my master's in Special Education. I'm certified in Early Childhood Special Education by the state of California and Preschool Early Intervention by the state of Louisiana. Before my children were born, I enjoyed teaching special education in Mandeville for St. Tammany Parish. I have had the privilege of learning from children with a wide variety of differences, including children with autistic spectrum disorders, Down Syndrome, dyslexia, dysgraphia, sensory concerns, anxiety, communication delays, and motor skills delays. I have also had additional training in sign language, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, Applied Behavior Analysis, social skills training, and assistive technology. My experience in special education is not limited to the teacher's perspective. When I got married in 2007, I became a full-time custodial parent to my husband's 10th grade son. I experienced first-hand what it is like to navigate "the system" as a parent. I learned how to walk that fine line of advocating fiercely for the best interests of my son without alienating the very people whose help I needed each and every day. By building a foundation of collaboration and mutual respect, the entire school staff worked with me to help him excel from failing in special ed to full inclusion and a full tuition TOPS scholarship by the end of high school. I am available for individual or small group tutoring most evenings or weekends. With enough notice, I am also available during the day to support families by attending school meetings with them to help answer questions, explore their options, advocate for their child's needs, or just listen in to ensure that I, as the tutor, am on the same page as parents, teachers, and service providers.
